The Irish evangelist Gypsy Smith once made the statement, “There are five Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and the Christian, and some people will never read the first four.” As Christians, ours is the sacred task of bearing witness, not just with our words but with the whole of our lives. Embodying our faith in today’s culture, we live as testimony of the story God has written and is writing. It is daunting to realize that our lives speak as loudly, or more loudly, than our words.
We might desire a quick fix – some easily learned one-size-fits-all, 1-2-3 apologetics that get the message across, clear and simple. Yet we all know that there is much more to being an effective apologist than memorizing all the right answers or reading the right books. There is a life and faith that must undergird any argument and, a sensitivity to the world that allows for discernment in difficult situations. And these come with time and effort. Our goal for the 2009 Summer Institute is to encourage, equip and inspire the participants to embrace the full meaning and implications of truly living an apologetic life.
