September 2006 eLetter
In the words of Ravi Zacharias:
- "RZIM is an apologetic ministry. We are here to lift the intellectual veil that casts a blinding shadow upon the eyes of the thinker. We exist to remove obstacles so that men and women may get a glimpse of the Cross of Jesus Christ. But not all shadows are imagined. Some are real. The pain and suffering of people is real."
In a world that is hurting, part of our task as Christians is to reveal the love of Christ through our actions so that a spring that would well up to eternal life might flow from the hearts of those who are touched. This is what Ravi calls "apologetics with a touch," and this is the focus of RZIM's Wellspring International. To read more about the mission and vision of Wellspring, visit the RZIM Wellspring International website.
Existential crisis caused by hurt and suffering was also the topic of an event RZIM held last May, entitled "Has Christianity Failed You...And What Does That Say About Jesus?"
- Evangelism & Apologetics... This last May RZIM's Michael Ramsden and Ravi Zacharias addressed a crowd of over 4,500 people at Atlanta's historic Fox Theatre on the topic of "Has Christianity Failed You... And What Does That Say About Jesus?" The DVD of this event, with extended Q&A, is now available for purchase. Click here for more details.
- "Gospel Under Attack" Seminar... RZIM will be heading back to our partner church, Woodmen Valley Chapel, in Colorado Springs, CO on Thursday, November 2, 2006 to address common attacks against Christianity from within today's culture. For more information, visit our Upcoming Events page.
- A Slice of Infinity... RZIM offers a free daily email called A Slice of Infinity. Combining profound cultural and biblical insight, A Slice of Infinity provides a daily reminder of the beauty and credibility of the Gospel. Almost every day of the year someone from the RZIM speaking team is traveling across the globe sharing the unique message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Below is a sampling of some of what is going on through RZIM around the world.
Where in the World is RZIM?
United States
Ravi and L.T. Jeyachandran spent the end of August speaking in Malaysia and the Philippines. There was a public meeting for about 2000 people, a dinner meeting for non-Christian colleagues of a Businessmen's group with some 350 people in attendance, a number of whom made professions of faith in Christ.
But without doubt, the most significant meetings were at the University of Malaya where for the first time an evangelical leader like Ravi could address a group of about 200 leaders and students, including a former Vice Chancellor and some Muslim Ulemas (Teachers). There was genuine interest in the Q&A time in response to Ravi's impassioned plea to carry on a dialogue among people of various religions taking care not to sacrifice the uniqueness of truth.
The other momentous meeting occurred at the second National Congress on Integrity. A Muslim intellectual and Ravi presented the basis for true integrity. This session has sparked off interest that will continue for a long time. Follow up meetings with interested individuals are already in the works.
Ravi and L.T. then went on to Australia where he met up with Stuart McAllister for a series of very fruitful meetings. Stuart and L.T. flew from Sydney to Melbourne to be at the 6000-member CityLife Church for their weekend services and a three-evening seminar. We are still receiving very positive feedback.
Alison Thomas spoke at a leadership conference in Battambang, Cambodia from Sept 18-21 held by Kampuchea for Christ International. She spoke on the uniqueness of Christ and the key differences between Buddhism and Christianity. She also ministered at a women's shelter and orphanage while in Cambodia.
United Kingdom
This summer has been a significant one in the life of The Zacharias Trust. During Michael Ramsden's time in Indonesia, large numbers of people came to Christ - often overwhelming the ability of the organizers to manage. Opportunities opened up to meet with senior political and business leaders, as well as to speak to professors and students from one of the leading Islamic universities. Overall, several thousand men, women and children responded to the call to follow Christ. We praise God for all he is doing in Indonesia.
Amy Orr-Ewing has been at the Keswick Convention, where she gave a number of talks and seminars including the Keswick Lecture entitled "The Place of Apologetics in a Post-Modern Culture." One lady there remarked that she hadn't cried since she was 11, but in each one of Amy's meetings she had found tears in her eyes. She was 80 years old. Amy's meetings at Soul Survivor were packed with teenagers and students hungry to learn. At Momentum (Soul Survivor for students and 20s), she and her husband Frog answered difficult questions from the main stage to an audience of over 4,000.
India
Sam Thambusamy ministered in various settings at the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. He taught at a course titled "Telling the Gospel Story in an Information Age" at the Urban Pastors Training Institute. He also had the opportunity to speak to the students of St. Anne's School, Secunderabad on the title "Mind and Media: Exploring Connections," and to students at Hyderabad Central University on the "Da Vinci Code."
Neil Vimalkumar was at Hyderabad early September to lead training in Christian Apologetics. Later Neil spoke at the assembly of the David Memorial College to their MBA and MCA students. Just as he finished, one of the organizers quickly decided that he should speak to another assembly too. The organizer interrupted another lecturer who was speaking and requested her to continue another day and gave the podium to Neil. There were around 500 people-about 99% non-Christian-and he could see them connecting with the message.
Cyril Georgeson continued with the Persuaders training program at Gurgaon with the Gurgaon Christian Fellowship. He was glad to see that they are getting more active and asking more questions.
Balajied Nongrum spoke in two meetings, at Assam Engineering College on the topic "Godly Living in a Secular World" based on the book of Daniel and at the Guwahati Baptist Church on the topic "Living Truth and Living It Truthfully."
Tejdor Tiewsoh spoke in two meetings at Guwahati University and Indian Institute of Technology. Two friends from other faiths showed a keen interest to know more. Please pray as they plan to meet with them again in the future.
Canada
God is doing great things through Joe Boot and RZIM's Canadian office. In October Joe will be speaking at the Truth Convention in Toronto and later in the month at Ontario University. Look for more updates in next month's eLetter.
Singapore
I'Ching Thomas was invited to speak at an inter-faith forum organized by the Melaka Multimedia University in Malaysia along with representatives from three other major religions: Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. Each speaker had 20 minutes to speak on the topic, "Is Religion a Way of Life?" followed by a 90-minute Q & A session. Most of the 600 students who turned up were Muslim young men from the Middle East. As there was no restriction to what she could say, she focused mainly on the need for Jesus to die on the cross as the suffering servant.
During the question and answer time, half of the questions posed were directed to I'Ching. As expected, issues like the authority/reliability of the Bible, the Trinitarian God and the incarnation of Jesus were brought up. There were also questions on the Christian view on homosexuality, divorce and polygamy. I especially appreciated these questions as the Christian response to these issues is so radically different from the Muslims' and so much more credible and livable.
After the meeting, a group of students gathered around her with more questions - mostly about the Trinity and on the need for God to sacrifice his son. These students seemed genuinely interested in the answers to their questions.
Middle East
Please continue to pray for Christopher and Elizabeth Darla's ministry in the Middle East, particularly during the currently heightened tensions in this part of the world.
Please continue to pray for our team as RZIM maintains a strong presence in universities, the arts, politics, business, and the Church throughout the world. Through open forums, community outreach, radio, and the ministry of Wellspring International, we seek to remove the barriers to the Cross for the skeptic as we prepare Christians to give a reason for the hope within us. And please know that we are here to serve you in any way that we can, so please feel free to contact us by phone at (770) 449-6766 or via our website, www.rzim.org.
God bless,
