Remembering George H.W. Bush

"I'm miles away from home as I receive this news of the passing of former president George H.W. Bush. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Bush family."

A reflection from Ravi Zacharias.

I'm miles away from home as I receive this news of the passing of former president George H.W. Bush. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Bush family. I had the privilege of meeting George W and Jeb Bush on different occasions. But never the privilege of meeting the father. That was my loss.

There are two things I remember most about him. During the debates against his opponent, the media was trying to bait him into some negative comment about Ronald Reagan, his predecessor. His comment was, "If that's what it takes to win the presidency, I don't want it that badly." Then during the debates, he had reason to be frustrated with some veiled disrespect that was shown to him. Yet, following his loss, he and President Clinton became good friends. That told me the character of the man he was. The position did not make him who he was. Who he was, earned him the position. May God grant the family His peace and consolation. The nation has lost a great man.
